Mock exam — Navigation A — Coastal, Mashit 30

6 open questions in 120 minutes, as in the exam: one of chart knowledge and one of each of the five kinds of calculation, chosen to cover as many topics as possible. There are no failing questions.

You solve it on chart 1000 and on paper. At the end each sub-question shows the answer from the key, and you mark whether yours came out right, close or wrong; the marks build a weakness analysis by topic and by kind of question.

The kinds of question

  • Chart knowledge — 12 questions. Short questions with no story first: read it off the chart or answer from knowledge — lights, buoys, depths, symbols and terms.
  • Fixes and compass error — 15 questions. An observation at one moment — two marks in line, a light rising over the horizon, or a known position and a compass bearing. From it you find where the ship is, and the compass error.
  • Running fix — 12 questions. Two bearings at two times, a course and a speed — and no position. The first line is moved along the distance the ship ran.
  • Planning a route in several courses — 9 questions. “in two courses” or “three”, the shortest way, and a condition that sets where to turn. No wind, no current.
  • Current — 12 questions. A current is given, or the sub-questions ask you to find it. The current triangle separates what you steer from what the ship makes over the ground.
  • Beating in tacks — 12 questions. “under sail only” and “can point X° to the wind”: two courses from the wind, leeway on each tack, and the turn where they cross.
